Blair Road

Qu

an alternative art school

Martin is a great landlord. For the last 25 years he has had around 20 lodgers living in his family home for extremely affordable rates. His lodgers have ranged from organisers to artists including previous lodgers Isaac Rose (writer of The Rentier City) and Sam Fairbrother (clog dancer and theatre director). Without Martin and his house, Manchester would be a different place. Because of the low rent, Martin has given his lodgers the opportunity to not work full time which most need to survive in this city. And it is people like Martin who are creating a little oasis in neoliberal Manchester for artists and organisers to experiment and follow their Leadings.

Since moving into Blair Road, Tanith has been keen to share the wonders of the house with others. As well as wanting to create opportunities to build strong loving networks outside of institutions. This started with Qu Art School, an alternative art school at the house (2024 – 2025), and has evolved into a Thinking Residency in 2026.
